Tire FAQs
In working with folks near Worcester, Auburn, and Shrewsbury, MA, our Harr Toyota team has discovered that most drivers have questions about their tires. For example, what’s a tire’s speed rating? What is the tire pressure and how do I adjust it if it’s low? Or, what do they mean by tire balance?
Getting these questions answered will make you a more prepared car owner, which is why we’ve created a range of helpful tire FAQs. If you find you have more questions about tires or need to visit a shop to have your tires adjusted, repaired, or replaced, look to our service center!
What Is a Tire’s Speed Rating?
There are a lot of different types of tires. As you’ll see later in this overview, you can enjoy tires for speed, fuel economy, traction, and more. One of the ways to measure a tire’s performance is its speed rating.
The tire speed rating is the fastest speed you can go while still expecting the tires to work as they’re designed to. So, if you exceed a tire’s speed rating while driving, your vehicle may see diminished traction and other performance attributes.
What Is Tire Balancing?
All four of your tires should be balanced in relation to one another. This is especially true when it comes to wear and tear over time. If one tire is far more worn than others, your ride will become unbalanced. This unbalance will show itself as you drive in rattling, shaking, or a general uneasiness as you turn and stop.
If your tires become unbalanced, you can bring them into the shop for a balancing. The balancing process will adjust your set of tires, helping ensure the tire weight distribution of the vehicle is level.
What Is Tire Pressure?
Tire pressure is the amount of air in each of your tires. The unit of measurement to determine tire pressure is pounds per square inch or PSI. For most vehicles, you want your tire pressure in each tire to be between 30 and 35 PSI. At most gas stations, you can use a tire pressure gauge and a pump to measure the PSI of a tire and if needed, fill it up to the appropriate level.
What Type of Tires Is Right for Me?
The type of tire you choose for your vehicle is going to be important and also should reflect the type of model you drive. So, if you’re always looking to get the most fuel economy you can while on the road, we have tires that will help you do that.
When the winter months come, we have all-weather tires that will help you retain traction over slick or snowy roads. There are tires for off-roading, tires for performance vehicles, and many other choices, too. Our tire shop can help you outfit your vehicle with the ideal set!
