Like many car companies, Toyota has been moving away from an uninspiring boxy SUV look in the past few years. The 2018 Highlander follows this trend, and you’ll notice a much rounder, contoured, and dimensional exterior in this model than its predecessors. The Highlander sports a bold grille design this year, giving it a more respectable appearance, and a more aesthetically pleasing front fascia. Halogen or LED lights, which can be programmed automatically or operated manually, make the Highlander more visible to other drivers and add to its distinct appearance. Depending on the trim, you can get 18-inch wheels or upgrade to 19-inch alloy wheels for a more stunning look. Roof rails and chrome accents are optional enhancements.

With a versatile interior, you have several custom options to craft the Highlander just the way you want it. Inside, you can choose from captain’s chairs or a third row of seats in the back to hold seven or eight passengers, respectively. Cloth seats are standard, but you can upgrade to leather seats, which can also be heated and ventilated if you so choose. Dual zone climate control is standard on the base trim, while three-zone climate control is standard in the remaining trims. All trim levels come with an eight-inch infotainment display system, which gets standard navigation in the higher-end trims. With a 120V power outlet in all but the base model and five USB ports throughout the cabin, it’s easy to keep devices charged on the road.

Standard on all Highlander trim levels is Toyota’s Safety Sense package. Lane departure alert, which comes with steering assistance to help you maintain control, frontal collision mitigation with pedestrian alert, radar-controlled cruise control, and automatic high beams are notable features you’ll find on the Safety Sense package. Adding to this tech-oriented safety suite is Toyota’s “Star Safety System” with vehicle stability control, anti-lock brakes, and start-stop technology.
