Overview

The Toyota 4Runner is a trailblazing legend and a true SUV: it’s still built body-on-frame on a truck platform, unlike its more carlike (and less capable) unibody rivals. It returns for the 2020 model year with a couple of TRD off-road variations that will have no trouble navigating the most rugged terrain you can find. This model year also brings the standardization of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) across the entire trim lineup. All 2020 4Runners now also get an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Powertrain by Trim Level

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is available in three main trim levels (SR5, SR5 Premium, and Limited), two special editions (Venture and Nightshade), and three TRD variations (TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro). All models get their power from a 4.0-liter V6 engine that pounds out 270 horsepower and 278 pounds-feet of torque. The transmission is a five-speed automatic. The TRD and Venture Special Edition get four-wheel drive as standard, while the other trims get rear-wheel drive by default with 4WD available.

Standard Features by Trim Level

The base SR5 comes with heated side mirrors, roof rails, a windshield wiper de-icer, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, 40/20/40 split fold-flat second-row seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and keyless entry. Infotainment is handled by an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming. The other standard multimedia features include an eight-speaker audio system, two USB ports, and satellite radio. A sliding rear cargo deck, 50/50 split-folding rear seats, HD radio, and integrated navigation are all optional. The SR5 Premium yields upgraded seats, push-button ignition, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, integrated navigation, and HD radio. A sunroof is available along with the remaining options from the SR5.

The Venture Special Edition adds a few unique styling elements and all-weather floor liners. The sunroof remains optional, but it’s included on the top-tier Limited. This trim also receives dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-upholstered heated and ventilated front seats, memory functions for the driver’s seat, a power-adjustable passenger’s seat, and a premium 15-speaker JBL audio system. The Nightshade Edition is set apart visually with unique blacked-out styling elements.

TRD Models

Anyone looking to travel off the beaten path should check out one of the three TRD versions of the 2020 4Runner. The TRD Off-Road provides the equipment from the base SR5 in addition to an overhead console with multi-terrain select, active traction control, a locking rear differential, crawl control switches, and a trim-specific shift knob and floor mats. Integrated navigation and a kinetic dynamic suspension system are both available.

The TRD Off-Road Premium is furnished with red TRD lettering embroidered into the front headrests. The kinetic dynamic suspension remains optional, but the navigation unit is standard. The decked-out TRD Pro comes with this suspension, and most of the equipment from the Limited trim is standard along with a special Toyota front grille, black TRD Pro exterior badging, matte-black TRD alloy wheels, TRD-stamped aluminum front skid plates, and TRD shocks.
