A common question we receive when folks come by our service shop is “how often should I change my transmission fluid?”

The answer to this question depends on a few factors, which we’ll get into in the coming sections. If you read the article and find you need a transmission fluid change, our service center can handle it for you!

How Often Does Transmission Fluid Need to Be Changed?

Transmission Service

It’s recommended you change your transmission fluid once every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. There’s a pretty large gap in that estimate. So, how can you tell exactly when your transmission fluid needs to be swapped out?

The exact mileage of a transmission fluid change for your vehicle is going to depend on the type of driving you do each day. For instance, if you have a truck or large SUV that regularly tows heavy trailers, changing the transmission fluid more often is the right call. Those in urban areas will also want to plan for more frequent transmission fluid changes because your vehicle is constantly moving from gear to gear while driving around cluttered streets.

How Can I Tell if I Need to Change My Transmission Fluid?

You know how your car is supposed to react and behave while driving. As soon as the transmission begins to act wonky or behave in a way it normally doesn’t, changing the fluid is going to be a smart choice.

Often, when a transmission needs the fluid changed, the car will have trouble going into the right gear. So, if you accelerate and the car doesn’t go into a higher gear, instead staying in a low gear and revving to the redline, it could be due to old transmission fluid.

Other odd behavior found in transmissions that need a fluid change includes:

  • Loud noises, like thumps or bangs, while shifting gears.
  • Constantly slipping from one gear to the next.
  • Long pauses in acceleration.

Transmission FlushWhat is a Transmission Flush?

The process of completely removing worn transmission fluid and replacing it with new fluid is called a transmission flush. At our service center, we perform this service regularly and can do so for your model, too.

The more often you receive a transmission flush, the longer your transmission should last. The process itself takes a couple of hours. Our service facility prides itself on efficiency and effectiveness, so we’ll get you back on the road as soon as we can!
